For some years now, the West has added to the benefits of meditation to calm the brain and submerge in states that add psychic and physical benefits to the human being. Good news, which makes Argentines proud, is that tango can lead to the same mental states experienced by people who meditate regularly. And the more expert the dancers are, the higher levels of well-being.
This is assured by an experiment published by the National Library of Medicine of the United States. The scientists analyzed if the Argentine tango is as effective as the conscious meditation to reduce the symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression.

For the experiment, 97 people with depression were randomly assigned to a tango dance class, a meditation class, or none at all (to form a control group). The conclusion was that both meditation and tango could be used effectively as a complementary treatment for depression and stress management.

And there is something even more interesting: a study conducted at the Santa Maria University of California took the concept and went a little further. He measured the brain activity of the dancers using an electroencephalogram and observed that the tango dancers, concentrating on what they did, achieved the same levels of mindfulness as when they are in practice.
As the mind relaxes, the brain enters a state of increased alpha wave activity. These waves appear before sleeping and during meditation. The study summarizes that the most experienced tango dancers showed a more potent alpha state compared to other groups in the experiment.
